A boyhood in the Georgia woods
Gone Thinking is the true story of growing up in Morrow, Georgia, in the 1960s and 70s, when a boy learned to hunt, to build, to sit still, and to listen.
It follows that boy into a life of turkey woods, Alaskan islands, and long miles on a Harley, and into the years of giving it all back. Along the way it asks what we have quietly let slip in a faster, louder age.
The Early Years
My dad's archery range, the woods behind everything, a rattlesnake, and a Boy Scout initiation at twelve.
The Middle Years
Turkey seasons, hog hunts with a wrestling champion, Harleys across the country and across Cuba, and a bear hunt in Alaska.
The Later Years
Giving back to the woods that gave me everything, plus a survival guide for readers today.
The Rattlesnake
Some fathers kept a dog. Mine kept a rattlesnake in an aquarium with a plywood lid and a rock on top.
These were different times. This is probably not how we would do it today, but it is what happened. It is in Chapter 3.
Meet Jeff
Hunter, conservationist, entrepreneur, father of four, and grandfather of seven. At sixty seven he still hunts turkeys every spring, and he still goes to the woods for the same reason he did at eight years old.
